Crashes — Ongoing Series (2021–)

Crashes is an ongoing series of sculptures and works on paper made with cardboard, acrylic, and, at times, gold leaf.
The series takes its cue from the fractures, collisions, and interruptions that mark both material and emotional landscapes — those moments in which the surface of things breaks, and a new form of visibility emerges.

The title evokes both accident and aftermath: the instant of rupture and the slow process of reconfiguration that follows. In these works, fragility is not concealed but elevated; the broken becomes a site of beauty, and the trace of collapse becomes the condition for renewal.

Informed by Byung-Chul Han’s reflection that “beauty is the complementary colour of pain”, Crashes transforms the mark of damage into a counterworld of light.
Cardboard — together with other packing and shipping materials — carries the memory of transport, logistics, and acceleration. By recontextualising these industrial and ephemeral substances, Rizzetto questions the infrastructures of velocity and disposability that underpin contemporary life.
What usually serves to protect, contain, or circulate becomes here the very matter of reflection — an architecture of fragility that exposes the cost of constant movement.

Within this process, gold leaf and pigment intervene not as decoration but as acts of care: luminous sutures that convert rupture into radiance. Each piece oscillates between sculpture and drawing, between surface and wound.
The process itself mirrors repair — tentative, patient, and open-ended — transforming the signs of damage into gestures of endurance.

Through its modest materials and tactile immediacy, Crashes becomes a meditation on resilience and temporality: an archaeology of the present that reimagines how beauty can emerge precisely where systems — material or emotional — begin to fail.

As in much of Rizzetto’s practice, the cut and the wound are not conclusions but beginnings. Crashes reclaims fragility as potential, turning collapse into creation — a counterpoint to the accelerated rhythms and disposability of the contemporary world.
